Todesmarschdenkmal Nitscha
GleisdorfIn 2005 the community of Nitscha (today part of the municipality of Gleisdorf) initiated a book project and collected the memories of contemporary witnesses. In the course of this research, it was found that Jews were also driven through Nitscha during the death march in 1945.
The Gleisdorf memorial also gave rise to the idea of implementing a memorial in Nitscha. The municipality of Gleisdorf started a youth competition for the monument in Gleisdorf in 2006. The winning project came from Sabina Mahr, a young person from Nitscha. According to these plans, the monument was erected in Nitscha in 2014. The modern monument is intended to commemorate the death marches to the concentration camps that took place at the end of the war, on which thousands of people lost their lives. The municipality of Nitscha, library manager Bertram Riegler as well as Peter Gerstmann and Marianne Ofner from the High school Gleisdorf were responsible for the project implementation. The project was supported by the municipality of Nitscha and the Austrian Society for Civic Education.
The culture is accessible and can be visited all year round.
